Client Overview

The Parcel Store is a logistics business that relies on an Order/Warehouse Management System to process and fulfill customer orders. As the business grew and the need to support additional courier services increased, they required a reliable integration partner to build a middleware solution that could connect their warehouse system with multiple third-party courier APIs — without disrupting day-to-day operations.

The Challenge

Integrating the Order/Warehouse Management System with courier APIs for a seamless way to deploy new courier services without disrupting existing workflows. Label requests needed to be processed in real-time, translating the system's standard data into each courier's specific format — all while ensuring generated labels could be returned to the warehouse system ready for printing.

Key challenges included:

  1. Real-time Label Processing: Webhook data from the warehouse system needed to be captured, translated, and forwarded to the correct courier API instantly.
  2. Multi-Courier Support: Each courier has its own API specification, authentication methods, and data format requirements — the solution needed to handle all of them through a single entry point.
  3. Automated Label Generation: The entire flow from label request to generated label had to be fully automated, ready for the warehouse team to print.
  4. Reliability & Redundancy: High-volume periods demanded a system with built-in fault tolerance to ensure data integrity and prevent service disruption.

Our Approach

We built a custom middleware solution that acts as a translation layer between the Order/Warehouse Management System and various courier APIs. Our approach covered the following key areas:

1. Courier Service & Credentials Flow

We designed a flexible courier service and credentials flow that allows the middleware to connect to multiple couriers based on the selected courier service. Courier credentials are configured once, and the middleware handles routing requests to the correct courier API automatically — making it straightforward to add support for new couriers without changes to the core system.

2. API Translation Layer

The core of the solution — a custom-built API translation layer that converts standard label requests from the Order/Warehouse Management System into courier-specific formats. When a label request is triggered via webhook, the middleware captures the data, reformats it according to the target courier's requirements, and forwards it via the relevant shipping API. The generated label is then returned through the middleware and back into the warehouse system, ready for printing.

3. Redundancy & Fault Tolerance

Built-in redundancy measures ensure system reliability and fault tolerance. The architecture prevents service disruption and maintains consistent label processing even during unexpected failures or high-volume periods.

4. Scalability

The solution was architected to accommodate the addition of new couriers and services as needed. The modular design allows the system to grow with the business and handle increasing demand efficiently, without requiring significant rework.

Results

The middleware solution was successfully deployed, delivering significant operational improvements:

  • Fully Automated Label Generation: The entire flow from order to generated label operates without manual intervention, saving time and eliminating human error.
  • Rapid Courier Expansion: New courier services can be added rapidly using a standardized design under the hood, without disrupting existing workflows.
  • Real-time Processing: Label requests are processed and returned in real-time, ensuring no delays in the fulfillment process.
  • Reliable & Scalable: The architecture handles high-volume periods with built-in redundancy, ensuring data integrity and consistent service availability.
  • Full WMS Integration: The solution meets Order/Warehouse Management System standards for seamless integration, enabling a partnership-level integration.

We delivered a robust, scalable middleware that transformed The Parcel Store's courier integration capabilities — enabling fast, automated, and error-free label generation across multiple courier services.
